Criminal Eel O'Brian is caught by police during a robbery. During the melee, O'Brian is shot and a vat of acid spills over him, getting into his wound. O'Brian escapes and wanders up to a mountain retreat before passing out. He wakes up and finds he is being cared for by a monk. The kindness of the monk convinces O'Brian to reform. He then realizes that he has aquired fantastic stretching and resiliency abilities, and becomes Plastic Man, fighting crime alone and as a member of the Justice League.
