An inventor named William Magnus builds six robots each made out of various kinds of metals to protect mankind. By utilizing the "responsometer", Magnus endows the robots with individual personalities. Each robot has the 'powers' of his/her respective metal and all the robots can change shape at will.

The Metal Men have fought against various villains including Eclipso and the Missle Men, and have teamed with Superman to save Metropolis and the Earth.
