The Flash

College student Jay Garrick is investigating an experimental form of heavy water, when an accident releases hazardous fumes that render him unconscious. After inhaling the fumes all night, he awakes in the hospital to discover he can move and react at superhuman speed. He becomes the crimefighter, the Flash, and a founding member of the Justice Society of America.

Police scientist Barry Allen is struck by lightning in his lab one night, and splashed with chemicals from a nearby cabinet. He finds he can run at super-speed. Inspired by Jay Garrick, Allen adopts the identity of the Flash, quickly becoming a celebrated hero. He is a founding member of the Justice League. Later, during the Crisis of Infinite Earths, Barry breaks all limits of speed and travels backward in time, merging with the speed field and becoming the bolt of lightning that struck his lab that fateful day he became the Flash.
