A Brief History

In 1847, Oliver Chase of Boston invents and patents the first American candy machine, the lozenge cutter. In the same year, Oliver and his brother, Silas, create Chase & Company and begin production of the candy wafer. In 1901, the New England Confectionary Co. is created, commonly referred to as Necco. Necco wafers were distributed to soldiers during the US Civil War and during both World Wars. (Necco denies that the same wafers manufactured then are still being sold today.) Necco also makes Sweethearts (those candy hearts with cute sayings on them), Clark Bars, Mary Janes and Squirrel Nut Zippers (the candy, not the hipster jazz ensemble).
